EYE HEALTH ISSUES (alphabetical order)

Eye diseases/disorders which have occurred in the Mudi breed:

Atresia of Lacrimal Punctum (ALP)
Auto Immune Uveitis (AIU) separate information links listed below
Cataracts (Cat) (genetic inheritance is evident)
Cross Eyed (CE) (strabismus)
Distichiasis (Dist) (genetic inheritance is evident)
Early Age Blindness (EAB) (cause is under investigation)
Ectopic Cilia (EC)
Entropion (ENT)
Glaucoma (GLCA)
Hyaloid Artery (HA)
Iris Atrophy (IRAT)
Micropthalmia (Micro)
Ocular Sclerosis (OCSC)
Pannus/Keratitis (PNSK)
PPM (Persistent Pupillary Membrane) (genetic inheritance is evident; please see note below for important eye exam requirements)
PHTVL/PHPV (Persistent Hyperplastic Tunica Vasculosa Lentis/Persistent Hyperplastic Primary Vitreous)
Retinal Degeneration (RDEG)
Retinal Detachment (RDET)
Retinal Dysplasia (RDYS)
Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome (SARDS)
Trichiasis (Trich)
Vitreous Degeneration (VD)

Regarding PPM: Because of the presentation nature of PPM, examination prior to pharmacological dilation is recommended to best facilitate identification of the disorder, as is done in other breeds that have PPM occurrence.  However as the Mudi is not yet on the CERF list of breeds where this is necessary, it is the responsibility of the person that is taking the dog for an eye exam to tell this to the veterinary ophthalmologist before the exam begins!

EAR HEALTH ISSUES

Deafness (BAER test determines normal hearing, bilateral (deaf in both ears), unilateral (deaf in one ear))

What is the BAER test?

BAER testing locations, International list:

I know of 5 deaf Mudis. While 5 deaf Mudis are not significant, without BAER testing randomly made throughout the population, we cannot be sure that there are not inherited deafness issues in the breed. One of the 5 is most probably deaf due to being homozygous merle (M/M), this means the deafness in this individual is likely not hereditary.  The remaining 4 share family connections.

Details of these health issues will be covered
in a future Mudi Directions post.
