MGENS

 Mudi GENerations Service

Population genetics for the Mudi breed and Mudi breeder!

Did you ever wonder if all the founders that started the officially recognized Mudi breed in the 1960's are still behind the Mudis alive today?

Would you like to know if your lines are genetically diverse?

Would you like to know which founder lines are missing from your kennel?

MGENS Purpose and Goals
for the Mudi Breed and Breeders

Preserving the remaining genetic diversity in small breeding populations is vital. With the use of our international breed database and a population genetics program, MGENS and breeders can work together to use the data results produced to equalize representation of the breed founders in the overall breed population.

For example, if a breed had ten founders, but most of the population alive today descended only from three of them, much of the genetic potential of the breed’s gene pool is at risk of being lost as genes from the less represented founders fail to get passed down by their fewer descendants.

You can preserve underrepresented genes by equalizing founder representation by giving breeding preference to individuals that do not descend from the most represented founders and by avoiding crossing of their descendants to each other.

Since low population breeds are at greater risk from genetic disease, due to the smaller amount of mate choices, maximizing genetic potential in this manner may be the line between a breed’s extinction or survival.

More information will be provided on the valuable benefit MGENS will provide to the Mudi breed and Mudi breeders when it becomes available.
