Health Testing

HEALTH TESTING RECOMMENDATIONS &
HEALTH/GENETIC ISSUES
IN THE MUDI BREED

TOP TEN HEALTH/GENETIC ISSUES
(highest to lowest concern)

#1  Epilepsy
#2  Orthopedic Issues: Patella Luxation (PL), Hip Dysplasia (HD), Elbow Dysplasia (ED), Spinal Anomalies (SA)
#3  Eye diseases: PPM, Cataracts, Distichiasis
#4  Hypothyroidism
#5  Allergies/sensitivities; Immune System Diseases
#6  CDA (in ashgray/hamvas based Mudis) and BFD in black Mudis
#7  Teeth and Bite issues
#8  Cryptorchidism/Missing Testicles
#9  Heart disease
#10 Miscellaneous: Umbilical hernia; Tail kinks; Cleft Palate; Albinism (there is no DNA test for the type of albinism that affects the Mudi breed); Deafness

RECOMMENDED HEALTH TESTS
FOR ALL MUDIS
(all tests are of equal importance; these tests should be considered as mandatory for Mudis being used in breeding)

#1 Eye Exam: once a year is recommended, beginning at one year of age and continuing to 10 years of age
#2 Orthopedic exams:
Hips, Elbows, Patellas, Spine (age determined in each country for official score, ask your country's Mudi club for more information about the procedure and official orthopedic association used in your country for scoring (OFA-USA/Canada, MKOE-Hungary, etc.))
#3 Thyroid panel screening: yearly for breeding males and females; every 2-3 years for non-breeding Mudis
#4  DNA panel: for currently identified canine genetic diseases (for example those offered by: Embark, MyDog, Optimal Selection, Wisdom; links are provided below)

OTHER IMPORTANT TEST PARTICIPATION
FOR EXPANDED BREED KNOWLEDGE
(all tests are of equal importance)

#1  Epilepsy gene research via DNA submission from epileptics and their close relatives
#2  CDA/Blue/Dilution gene DNA research for ashgray and ashbrown colored Mudis
#3  DNA test to determine MDR1 (multi-drug sensitivity) presence in the Mudi breed (if a full DNA panel was not done)
#4  Blood test to determine PHA (Pelger-Huer Anomoly) presence in the Mudi breed (this test is not part of a full DNA panel)
#5  DNA test to determine DM (degenerative myelopathy) presence in the Mudi breed
(if a full DNA panel was not done) (DM has occurred in the Puli and carriers have been found in the Pumi and the Mudi)
#6  DNA cheek swab submission for Canine Hereditary Cancer research
#7  Temperament/character testing
#8  Herding Instinct testing
#9  BAER hearing test
#10
Heart exam

CHECKS AND RECORD KEEPING
YOU CAN PERFORM AT HOME
WHICH PROVIDES IMPORTANT INFORMATION
(all data is of equal importance)

#1 Tooth count - full dentition
#2 Bite type: scissors, under, over, level/even, wry
#3 Males - testicle count
#4 Females - heat cycle information: age of first heat, time between heats, reproductive issues
#5 Size and weight recording
#6 Health and temperament issue recording
#7 Litter production records (all matings which produced pups as well as those which did not; details of all pups born alive or stillborn, sex, color, tail length, etc.)
