Teeth & Bite

TEETH AND BITE ISSUES IN THE MUDI

BITE

In the Mudi the correct bite is scissors.

As per FCI Mudi Breed Standard: Complete scissor bite according to the dentition formula.

FCI Mudi Standard Disqualifying Fault: Over- or undershot mouth, wry mouth. Gap of more than 2 mm between upper and lower incisors.

Incorrect (malocclusion) bites that have occurred in the Mudi:

Level, pincer bite

Overbite, overshot

Underbite, undershot

Wry, crooked

Anterior and posterior cross bites (have not been reported in any Mudis at this time)

Bite faults show an inheritance pattern in dogs and in the Mudi.  Mudis with incorrect bite should not be bred.

TEETH

Correct dentition is complete (no missing teeth) in the Mudi.

The FCI Mudi breed standard states: Regular teeth of medium size.

Standard Disqualifying Fault: One or more missing teeth (incisors, canines, premolars 2-4, molars 1-2). More than two missing PM1. The M3 are disregarded.

Tooth/teeth issues that have occurred in the Mudi:

Enamel Hypoplasia

Extra and Doubled teeth

Fused teeth

Gum disease

Missing teeth

Placement errors (crooked, wrong location,etc.)

Retained Puppy Teeth (requiring veterinary extraction)

The number and placement of teeth in dogs is strongly inherited. Mudis without complete and correct dentition should not be bred.
